Starting something new is hard
Launching a blog, podcast, or online business can feel so overwhelming. At least that’s how I felt back in 2015 when I launched my first online business (coaching). And then again when I started teaching.
And again when I launched my first online course.
And again when I launched a podcast.
And again when I launched The Kindling.
(And again any time I try to keep plants alive, but that’s a problem for another day.)
I doubted so many of my ideas and decisions, and I didn’t have a ton of confidence in the early stages. But more than anything, I felt a little bit alone. Don’t get me wrong, I have wonderful people in my life. But the truth is that none of them were starting online businesses or podcasts like me, so none of them could really offer guidance on what to name my business or how to grow a following. (Spoiler: I lost way too much sleep over both of these. I can’t wait to save you tons of trouble.)
And that was finally when my elusive “overnight idea” (aka over 3 years in the making) hit me.
If I didn’t know many fellow millennial women building online businesses, I probably wasn't alone. I'd have to find a way to connect us myself.
Welcome to The Kindling, a community of millennial women creating blogs, podcasts, and online businesses.
My vision for The Kindling is to help women build deep, meaningful connections with other women working on similar projects, like starting a blog, podcast, or online business. I believe that it’s these personal connections that provide the kinds of accountability and feedback that you could never get in a training or large free Facebook group alone, and my goal is to create a space where those deep connections and learning can grow.
Think of it this way...
Have you heard the expression that you become like the 5 people you spend the most time with? Well my goal is to get some seriously amazing women into that rotation who can inspire and elevate your dreams to new heights.
In other words, I want to turn your spark into a flame. And that’s where the name came from. I feel like I know you already because I can imagine exactly how you feel with that tiny spark of an idea hovering in the back of your mind. And what I want to do is give you the kindling to help bring that idea to life starting right now.
Here's what I want for you
I want you to feel confident that you’re choosing exactly the right topic for your expertise and lifestyle.
I want you to trust that you’re working on exactly the right next steps instead of getting lost in the dangerous world of procrastiworking, or “doing things” but not “getting things done.”
I want you to have a clear strategy that meets you exactly where you are. You should know what to do next and what success will look like to you on your current milestone.
I want you to have someone to talk to when you get stuck or want feedback.
And more than anything, I want you to know that you can do it. (I really believe that!)
So what do you say?

Above all, The Kindling is a community. We're here to share knowledge, to lean on each other, and to grow together. We believe that meaningful human connection is what it's all about, and our goal is to help you find the training, accountability, and personal connections you need to build the business, blog, or podcast you've been dreaming about.
We're not just trying to make money or grow a following over here. (Don't get me wrong, we're doing those, too.) But bigger picture, we're all building something meaningful, and we're all trying to share knowledge and help others. We want to leave a dent in the universe. (We're ambitious, after all.) But more than that, we want to touch individual lives, spread joy, and make a difference.
We are creative problem solvers, and we know that the pursuit of our big dreams won't always go as planned. But we see everything as a learning opportunity, so we don't wait until something is perfect to try it out. We are doers, not just dreamers, and we trust that over time, our persistence and consistency will pay off. Also, we aren't afraid to tell terrible jokes and let our quirky humor show. (Or maybe that's just me...)
Hey! I’m Melissa, founder of The Kindling and reader of #allthebooks. Ever since I launched my first side hustle in 2015, I’ve been hooked on online entrepreneurship and empowering people to go for their big, awesome dreams.
By day, I’m the Head of Special Projects at Teachable, an online tool that allows anyone to create and sell their own online courses. I’ve also been a top-rated instructor at General Assembly NYC for 2+ years, and I have 1400+ students currently enrolled in my Skillshare course, “What Great Managers Do Differently.”
Outside of work and teaching, I run a popular NYC Brunch Club (on Meetup.com) and sing in a pop & rock choir. Oh, and I love ice cream.
